Physical media is annoying.

I’ve been watching season 3 of Star Trek, the original series, which I own on dvd…but I don’t watch it on dvd. I’m missing some of the disks, but I have all the episodes ripped onto my computer now. It’s so much easier this way. I watch almost everything on my computer or the computer we have hooked up to our TV in the living room. I just have to make a few clicks to get to my video. Dvds take too much time to go find and then load into the computer/dvd player. Dvds always get lost or misplaced, and it seems like I’m constantly needing to download new codecs if I want to watch a dvd on my computer. Eff that. A lot of companies are making use of streaming and digital downloads, but not enough for my tastes. I know, I’m spoiled.

I’m also annoyed with how many books I want to read on kindle that aren’t available yet. And some cost more than the physical copies! Ugh. I know that in the beginning of the kindle marketing part of the deal was that the books were to be cheaper than real books. I guess I didn’t get on the boat soon enough to be spoiled by that, and I’m content to just view my kindle as a convenient device instead of a way to get cheaper books. Unlike my frustration with DVDs, I still am very fond of physical books. I like their size and shape, the cover art, and the smell…haha. They’re like prizes. So I’d be sad if ebook reading devices entirely displaced books. However, I enjoy the kindle for how easy it makes it to acquire a book. I can just be like, hey, that sounds interesting, I’d like to read it! And bam; I own it. Or, you can just read a sample. So now it’s extra frustrating to encounter those books that aren’t available on kindle, like Harry Potter. I guess I’m also unfortunate in that I like to read the less popular books by my favorite authors, plenty of which are too obscure for kindle. Several books I own in the physical version, but I’ve misplaced them and would have also purchased them in kindle just for the convenience of being able to read them RIGHT NOW. I’ve gotten used to instant gratification.

Technology needs to hurry up and meet my demands! =P
